Episode 73 - Brett Devloo (TBK – The Blind Kid) & Hippie Mike on Skateboarding, Resilience, Community & Blind Corners

On this episode of The PHYS Podcast, Tyson Martin sits down with two remarkable individuals whose lives demonstrate the transformative power of perseverance, creativity, and community: Brett Devloo, better known as TBK – The Blind Kid, and legendary skateboard mentor and community builder Hippie Mike.

This is more than a conversation about skateboarding.

It's a conversation about possibility.

About refusing to accept limitations.

About finding purpose, belonging, and hope when life presents challenges that seem impossible to overcome.

Brett Devloo is a visually impaired musician, songwriter, professional skateboarder, and motivational speaker from Aldergrove, British Columbia. Despite living with significant visual impairment, Brett has never allowed his circumstances to define what he can achieve.

Through music, skateboarding, and public speaking, he has built a life rooted in resilience, authenticity, and determination. His story is now the focus of the upcoming documentary Blind Corners, a film that explores his journey and the powerful relationships that helped shape it.

At its heart, Brett's story is not about disability.

It's about possibility.

It's about what can happen when someone chooses courage over fear and continues moving forward, even when the road ahead isn't fully visible.

Joining Brett is Hippie Mike, a lifelong skateboarder, mentor, educator, and founder of HMI Skate Park in Hope, British Columbia.

For decades, Mike has dedicated his life to building spaces where people can grow, connect, and belong. Through skateboarding, he has helped mentor generations of young people, including professional skateboarder Andy Anderson, while creating a culture built on encouragement, acceptance, and community.

Together, Brett and Mike represent the powerful relationship between personal resilience and community support.

Tyson, Brett, and Mike discuss how skateboarding became a vehicle for self-discovery, why mentorship matters, and how creating spaces for people to thrive can change lives.
