Episode 69 - Christa "C Funk" Funk on Pipeline, Surf Photography & Life Inside the World's Most Dangerous Lineup

On this episode of The PHYS Podcast, Tyson Martin sits down with Christa "C Funk" Funk, one of the world's most respected water photographers and a familiar presence in the lineup at the legendary Banzai Pipeline on Oahu's North Shore.

Known throughout the surf world simply as "C Funk," Christa has built a reputation for capturing some of the most dramatic and intimate images in surf photography. Whether photographing perfect six-foot barrels or navigating the chaos of second and third reef Pipeline during massive swells, she consistently places herself in the heart of the action to tell stories that few photographers are willing—or able—to capture.

Her work has been featured by Surfline, Freesurf Magazine, and numerous publications and media outlets throughout the surfing world. But behind the stunning imagery is a story built on discipline, resilience, preparation, and an unwavering commitment to her craft.

Long before she became a world-renowned surf photographer, Christa was a competitive swimmer and later graduated from the United States Coast Guard Academy. She served aboard the Coast Guard Cutter RUSH in Hawaii, where her love for the ocean continued to grow.

Photography entered her life through a classroom assignment in 2003, sparking a passion that would eventually change the course of her career.

As her photography evolved, she discovered surf photography offered something unique—the perfect intersection of her two greatest passions: swimming and storytelling.

Today, Christa spends countless hours in the water documenting professional surfers, rising stars, and the culture surrounding some of the most iconic waves on Earth. Her physical fitness, mental toughness, and deep respect for the ocean allow her to work in environments where mistakes can carry serious consequences.

Tyson and Christa discuss what it takes to thrive in extreme conditions, how storytelling remains central to her work, and why she continues to push herself creatively after years in the lineup.
