Episode 61 - Sean Bonner on Art, Activism, Web3 & Culture: From Crypto to Street Photography
On this episode of The PHYS Podcast, Tyson Martin sits down with Sean Bonner, a creator, entrepreneur, activist, photographer, musician, educator, and innovator whose career defies easy categorization.
For decades, Sean has operated at the intersection of art, technology, culture, and social impact, building projects that challenge conventions while connecting people across disciplines and communities. Whether through photography, activism, music, web3, environmental data, or digital culture, Sean has consistently explored what happens when creativity and curiosity collide.
Since 2020, Sean has become one of the most respected voices in the digital art and web3 space. As a Venture Partner with Japan's web3 fund gmjp, a leader of web3 initiatives for Obey Giant Art, and co-creator of the virtual lofi musician 8tari Lofi Punk alongside legendary producer DJ Muggs, he continues to help shape conversations around the future of art, ownership, technology, and creative communities.
But Sean's story stretches far beyond crypto and digital art.
His work has included research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) through both the Center for Civic Media and the Digital Currency Initiative. He has taught as an Associate Professor at Keio University in Japan, co-founded the environmental open-data nonprofit Safecast, served as a Shuttleworth Fellow, and co-authored 50 Shades of Green: Reimagining Philanthropy.
In the creative world, Sean has also built a reputation as a street photographer, experimental musician, and cultural documentarian. Working under names such as DRØNEWAR and Delay 5000, he has released music, built artistic communities, co-founded multimedia collectives, and helped establish the first hackerspace in Los Angeles.
His photography has been exhibited internationally and published in acclaimed photobooks including Don't Go Outside and his most recent release, Unfinished Projects.
Tyson and Sean explore a lifetime of creative experimentation, discussing why curiosity remains one of the most valuable skills any artist can develop.
