Episode 45 - Joe D’Agostino on Photography, Resilience, PTSD & Finding Healing Through Art
Content Note: This episode includes discussions surrounding trauma, PTSD, mental health, and experiences related to law enforcement and first responders.
On this episode of The PHYS Podcast, Tyson Martin sits down with photographer, writer, police officer, and SWAT Team Commander Joe D’Agostino for a deeply personal conversation about resilience, mental health, service, and the healing power of photography.
Joe's life has been shaped by two seemingly different worlds that ultimately became deeply connected. Growing up immersed in surfing, skateboarding, and Jiu Jitsu, he developed an appreciation for challenge, discipline, and personal growth. That mindset carried into a 24-year career in law enforcement, where he serves as a police officer, SWAT Commander, and Law Enforcement Sniper.
Throughout his career, Joe witnessed firsthand the realities that many first responders face—stress, trauma, loss, and the emotional toll that comes with serving others during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Recognizing the importance of mental health support, he helped spearhead his department's resiliency program, providing resources and guidance for officers coping with PTSD and the cumulative effects of trauma.
Photography became an essential part of that journey.
What began as a creative pursuit evolved into something much deeper: a form of therapy, reflection, and healing. Through photography, Joe found a way to reconnect with the world around him, shifting his focus from the darkness he often encountered professionally to the beauty, humanity, and quiet moments that exist in everyday life.
In this episode, Tyson and Joe discuss the relationship between photography and mental health, the challenges faced by first responders, and why creativity can become a powerful tool for healing and personal growth.
