Episode 101 - Jillian Brown on Resilience, Wilderness, PTSD & The Healing Power of Nature
On this episode of The PHYS Podcast, Tyson Martin sits down with Canadian documentary photographer, adventurer, and storyteller Jillian Brown for a deeply moving conversation about resilience, healing, wilderness, and the profound relationship between nature and mental health.
Some people photograph the outdoors.
Others are transformed by it.
Jillian Brown's story is one of those transformations.
Her photography has taken her through remote wilderness, across rivers, into mountain landscapes, and alongside communities whose lives remain deeply connected to the natural world. Yet behind the photographs lies a personal journey that is every bit as powerful as the places she documents.
Raised on a small island in Northwestern Ontario, Jillian grew up surrounded by wildlife, forests, water, and the rhythms of the natural world. After receiving her first camera as a young girl, she began documenting the landscapes and animals around her, unknowingly beginning a relationship with photography that would shape the rest of her life.
That early connection to nature became the foundation of her creative voice.
After studying Fine Arts and Photography, Jillian eventually made her way west to British Columbia in pursuit of adventure, creativity, and a life built around storytelling.
But the road forward was far from easy.
Following the end of an abusive relationship, Jillian found herself homeless and living in a tent in the woods while navigating the realities of PTSD.
It was one of the most difficult chapters of her life.
And it was also where healing began.
Surrounded by wilderness once again, Jillian discovered that the natural world offered something she desperately needed: space.
Space to breathe.
Space to process.
Space to reconnect with herself.
The forests, rivers, and mountains that had inspired her as a child became a refuge and a teacher, helping her rebuild her life one step at a time.
That healing journey would eventually inspire extraordinary adventures.
Jillian became the first Canadian woman to paddle across America and later completed a world-first expedition paddling a tandem sea kayak down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.
These journeys were about more than exploration.
They were about understanding.
Connection.
And discovering what becomes possible when we trust ourselves enough to keep moving forward.
Along the way, Jillian documented landscapes, wildlife, cultures, and human stories that reflect the powerful relationship between people and the natural world.
Her work has been featured through publications, outdoor organizations, educational initiatives, and national campaigns, including Bell Let's Talk, where she shared her experience navigating PTSD and the role nature played in her healing journey.
Today, Jillian continues to use photography, storytelling, public speaking, and wilderness experiences to encourage others to reconnect with the outdoors and with themselves.
In this conversation, Tyson and Jillian discuss adventure, trauma, recovery, creativity, and the lessons nature teaches us when we're willing to slow down and listen.
